Why anime is superior to any other commercial animation in the world? The answer lies in the anime itself, regardless its origin.
It's origin? Isn't anime means Japanese animation, used to be known as Japanimation? Wrong. Anime may be Japan-centric but it is produced anywhere in the world, including the nation outside Japan.
Since its earlier days, anime has always been so associated with Japan. Not a surprise since many of the staff involved, as well as the creator/director are Japanese. however, Production take places in many part on the globe. For example, South Korea animation studios have many ties with many anime production. Not to mention US animation studios that have indeed produced some big titles like Cowboy Bebop and the likes.
Anime doesn't have to be produced in Japan. As long as it retains the anime notable characteristics such as the big beautiful eyes and the likes, it is safe to be called anime.
Now, return to the question, why anime is superior? I have many answers for that. Using comparison method, I can find many reason why anime is superior. First, the character visual attraction. Have any of you ever compare which one is more attractive? For example, try compare between Haruhi Suzumiya and Kim Possible. Still can't get my drift? Anime has the 'turn-on' factor that may not only attract audience, but may also turn loyal fan into otaku.
The term otaku and otakuism may be new to many Westerners and non-Japanese people. Otakuism is like, fanboyism, but in different way. How much different? Both otaku & fanboy will pissed-off if people mock their interest. However, in western culture, fanboys usually will try to install their ideology in other people's head. Otaku, on the other hand only care for their own interest without forcing their ideology to other people. Otaku mainly exist for anime, and this explains that anime is made to have the 'real' feel. Too real compared to western animation. In other words, the existence of otaku prove that anime is way better.
Anime comes in many genre, from kiddy anime to serious-themed and even hentai. I don't have to explain what is hentai here. If you are reading this then you are using internet and you are supposed to know where to find the definition. In my 25 years of life, I think it is safe to say 99.99% of western animation is for kids. Of course it is impossible to have an animation made by-kids-for-kids. Western animation are made by-grownups-for-kids while anime is made by-grownups-for-grownups. That is why anime has so many genre, as its live-action counterpart. True, there are certain anime targeted towards kids but their existence does not overwhelm the serious genre. Besides, serious anime is more popular among general audience.
What makes anime looks so attractive anyway? Other than the good plot & storyline, I must say anime is also visually and graphically superior. The 2D paintjob, although look simple, are done seriously, passionately. The character look alive, as if they have their own life. The animating technique may be different to that of traditional western style which always emphasize on movement, still, anime managed to grab more adult & mature audience. The minimal movement imposed by limited usage of celframe fools the eyes of the audience, creating some sort of illusion that the characters are moving. This is the magic of anime.
In recent years, many anime creators have been experimenting by fusing 3D animation into the traditional 2D works. This can be seen in the serious mecha genre like the Gundam series, something western animation is lacking. Transformers? lol! The anime version of Transformers were done much better than those currently aired in Nickelodeon & Cartoon Network. The only American mecha anime that can sit on par with the Japanese made animation is Robotech.
Still blur of what anime is? Google & wikipedia is just around the corner.
Anime is always the best visual entertainment for me. Fine, I may not knowing what I amtalkin g about, but does that matter?
Just like music, I am also very strict when it comes to anime. That's why Narutah or Bleech never managed to enter my playlist. I may be still up to date with anime but usually it may take months before I decide to buy any title because I need to hear/read reviews from other fans first. Sometimes I might have to wait until the entire series ended in order to get complete review. Anyway, I don't really mind with spoilers so it is not much a problem for me to read reviews with spoilers.
Sometimes I wish I could play some MMORPGs but due to 'badwidth' (bad bandwidth), I haven't really play any until now, although occasionally some of my gamer friends might ask me for in-game helps (I am an avid offline gamer afterall). I will definitely play some free-2-play online games in the future (doesn't necessarily MMORPG, any genre will do), until I get enough pay for a good PC and good bandwidth subscription, or at least until I move to some area with free public wi-fi access (which is available in some residential area at my place here). I see some promising titles in prospect like Second Life, Guild Wars and Ragnarok Online.
If it's about pay-2-paly titles, I think it would be the commercial version of Ragnarok Online and Lineage. I don't prefer DotA and Everquest because they are just 'overkill' for me, with those over-designed visual stuff like the characters+costumes, monsters & environment. For me, things don't have to be overdesigned like that to look attractive. Just take a look at Ragnarok Online. The characters are simple but cute (moe) & attractive, and so do the monsters (I mean the simplistic side).
Honestly, in my eyes, many western-made titles are overkill/overdesigned, and that would include DotA as well. For online game I prefer slow-n-steady paced game, not the fast paced one. I prefer Korean & Japanese titles though. Do you know that even games have some sort of ideology? Western games like World of Warcraft are 'governed' by individualism while eastern games like Lineage are emphasizing more on community & socializing. You may not realize this until you play a lot of both titles. Although I never really play any of them, I do conducted some sort or detailed research and gather statistics from them. That's why I am able to come up with such idea.
Hey, you know what? I've read somewhere about a new 3D social environment by Google. It's not really a game but its 3D environment with 3D avatar looks cool for me. Its Lively

It's somehow still in beta, I think.
